If we take a look at the contemporary Greek literary scene, we will quickly come across the name of one of the most acclaimed living authors of modern Greek literature: Dimitris Lyacos. Born in Athens in 1966, Lyacos is the creator of a remarkable, complex, and deeply personal body of literary work, which is better known and recognized abroad than in his homeland. This international recognition should not surprise us, considering that after studying law in his hometown, Lyacos left Greece at an early age. He lived in Venice between 1987 and 1991, and later in London, where he studied philosophy at University College, specializing in analytical philosophy, epistemology and metaphysics, Presocratic philosophy, and Wittgenstein. Despite using modern Greek to write his works, they were first published outside Greece and translated into other languages. "Outside Greece, I have encountered more editors with a love and understanding of literature than in Greece," the author himself stated in an interview given a few years ago to a Greek literary publication.
